But Mrs. Lafayette smiled and shook her head. “You don’t need to call me that anymore. You successfully proposed to Romina tonight. You two are engaged and will be married soon enough. You can call me Mom.”

“Mom, River just proposed—we haven’t—” Romina began.

“Mom,” River cut in sweetly, changing his words without hesitation.

Mrs. Lafayette tilted her head, amused.

River smiled brightly. “Mom, you’re right. We’ll be married sooner or later, so it’s better to start calling you Mom now. Romina and I are really hungry. Thank you so much for preparing something for us. You’re too kind, Mom.”
