In the past, whenever Yantail’s CEO received an invitation, River was always the one to attend.

“Alright,” River said. “Go handle your meeting. Don’t drink too much.”

Romina laughed softly. “I drove here. I’m not drinking. They all drove too, so no one ordered alcohol.”

They were all seasoned business leaders—responsible enough to never drink and drive.

When the call ended, River turned to Leonidas. “Romina’s busy entertaining clients. She said she’ll be free on the weekend.”

Leonidas slung an arm around River’s shoulders. “Then let’s go have dinner anyway. Your sister-in-law’s been complaining that you haven’t come over in ages.”

River shot him a look. “You’ve got some nerve saying that. I’ve just been buried in work. You, on the other hand—I’ve never seen a boss as irresponsible as you.”

He wanted to remind Leonidas that he was the real boss, but then he remembered they each owned fifty percent of the shares. Technically, that made them equals.

As they walked together, Leonidas grinned. “Hey, I show up during the holidays and hand out bonuses. Everyone knows what I’m worth. Me being around doesn’t really help—it just slows things down. But you, I trust completely. I’m one hundred and twenty percent confident leaving everything in your hands.”

The elevator doors opened, and just as they stepped inside, Leonidas’s phone rang.

He released River’s shoulder and glanced at the screen. “Your sister-in-law again—probably calling to rush us for dinner.”

He answered with a smile, but that smile quickly faded.

River heard his tone turn sharp. “Why is she there? Tell her to leave! I can’t come home if she’s around.”

River didn’t hear the other end of the conversation, but when Leonidas hung up, he was frowning.

“Change of plans,” he said. “We’re going to the Eaglioncile Hotel. My wife’s cousin showed up. Remember her? She had that huge crush on you—fell for you at first sight.”

River raised an eyebrow, instantly recalling the trouble.

“For two years,” Leonidas went on, “she pestered you at the office every day until you finally lost your patience and fired her. You even ordered that none of my wife’s relatives could ever be hired again.”

To protect their partnership and avoid tension, Leonidas and his wife had given the cousin a harsh warning. They told her that if she bothered River again, they’d cut off all support for her family.

Back when Leonidas first started Yantail, it was a small operation with only a handful of employees—and a mountain of debt.

His wife’s family wasn’t wealthy either. To keep Yantail afloat, she’d borrowed money from her relatives. One of those loans, from her cousin’s family, was just $10,000—not much, but enough to help.

Ordinary families didn’t have large sums lying around, and that $10,000 had meant a lot back then.

After Yantail turned around and Leonidas became a billionaire, he and his wife repaid every debt they owed.

But over time, her relatives grew used to depending on them. Whenever they were short on cash, they’d ask for “loans” that were never repaid.

Mrs. Gaudreault had even tried to help them by giving them jobs at Yantail.

But her relatives were hopeless—lazy, constantly late, and even forming cliques to undermine River.
