He said gently, “Wife, you’ve thought this through very carefully. Let’s get to know Nancy better first. If she’s a good person, trustworthy, and Trenton truly likes her, then we’ll respect his choice.”

Camryn nodded. “He’s choosing someone to spend the rest of his life with. No matter who he likes or ends up marrying, I’ll respect his decision. If his wife turns out to be a good person, I’ll stay close and spend more time with them. But if she’s not, I’ll keep my distance and treat the marriage like it doesn’t exist. We can’t afford to be careless when it comes to the safety of the children. There are too many people out there who try to snoop into our family’s private matters through relatives or friends.”

That was exactly why the men of the York family paid so much attention to both the character of their wives and the background of their wives’ families.

Callum said, “Alright, I’ll follow your lead. But should you explain all this to Trenton? I’m worried he might misunderstand and think you don’t trust him—or that you don’t respect or care for the person he likes.”

Camryn paused to consider it, then replied, “He should understand.”

Callum shook his head. “Not if you don’t explain it. All he knows is that the girl he likes wanted to visit your in-laws’ home, and you said no.”

Camryn nodded. “You’re right. I’ll call him now and explain so he doesn’t take it the wrong way.”

Callum encouraged her to make the call right away.

His concern wasn’t without reason. After Trenton received Camryn’s refusal, his mood took a dive.

He didn’t even know how to respond to Nancy.

Nancy had said she’d heard Wildridge Manor was beautiful, like a grand garden, and had always wanted to visit. Now that they were close—as old classmates and longtime friends—she finally had the courage to ask.

Trenton truly believed Nancy was just curious and wasn’t trying to use him to gain favor with the York family. But his sister’s rejection made it clear—Camryn didn’t trust Nancy.

Was she worried Nancy was using him to get close to the York family's unmarried young masters?

There were still three York men who hadn’t married.

But Nancy wasn’t that kind of person. If she were, she would have taken advantage of countless opportunities already. She never pursued him romantically; they had only ever been friends.

Trenton liked her deeply, but he was afraid to confess his feelings. What if she rejected him? What if they couldn’t even stay friends afterward? He was also scared that Nancy would look down on him because of his family background.

Even though he was a young master of the Newman family—and Camryn had returned part of the Newman business to him to manage—his parents were not good people. They were serving long prison sentences for serious crimes and might never be released.

A decent girl from a respectable family would surely mind that kind of baggage.

So, Trenton buried his feelings, staying in the friend zone.

He sometimes joked with Nancy, asking what kind of man she liked so he could introduce someone. Nancy always replied that it depended on fate and feelings—basically dodging the question.

Just as he was sinking into frustration, his phone rang. It was Camryn.

He quickly pushed aside his gloomy thoughts and answered with a smile in his voice, trying to hide his disappointment.

“Big sister.”

Even though Wildridge Manor was Camryn’s in-laws’ home, there were many York family members. Camryn wasn’t the one calling the shots, and Trenton understood she couldn’t let just anyone visit. He respected that.
