“Hello, Seventh Uncle River.”

After confirming River’s identity, the little boy politely greeted him and extended his right hand for a handshake, mimicking a grown-up’s formality.

He had often accompanied his father to the company and noticed how his dad shook hands with people. After seeing it so many times, Luis assumed it was the proper way to greet someone, so he did the same with River.

River didn’t laugh at him. Instead, he crouched down and shook the boy’s hand seriously.

Romina stood by, silently impressed. The young master of the Lafayette family is so mature for his age—cautious, but incredibly well-mannered. Definitely advanced for a child his age. She thought of her own family and sighed inwardly. The Lafayettes have nothing to worry about. They already have a capable successor lined up. Meanwhile, my family still doesn’t have the next generation.

It was no wonder her grandfather kept urging her to marry—he just wanted a successor so he could feel at peace.

River smiled at Luis and said, “This is Aunt Romina. Uncle River really likes her and is courting her. If everything goes well, she’ll be your Seventh Aunt one day.”

“River!” Romina scolded, cheeks flushing. “Why are you telling that to a child?”

River only chuckled. “I’m just being honest. You shouldn’t lie to kids.”

Luis turned to Romina and greeted politely, “Hello, Aunt Romina.”

He didn’t call her “Seventh Aunt” yet because River had said they weren’t married. He figured he’d save that title for after their wedding.

“What’s your name?” River asked warmly.

“Uncle River, my name is Luis Lafayette.”

“That’s a great name.” River reached out and gently wiped sweat from Luis’s forehead. “Your nanny told you not to run so fast. Look at you—you’re drenched in sweat.”

Luis replied, “I heard Daddy was home, and I was in a hurry to see him. He’s always so busy. He leaves early and comes home late. When he leaves, I’m still asleep, and when he comes back, I’m already asleep. Even though Daddy comes home every night, I haven’t seen him in so long.”

It was summer vacation, and all his friends had already gone on trips with their parents. Luis had to find happiness at home by himself, but deep down, he longed for his parents to take him on a trip too—even if just for a couple of days. That would make him happy.

His mom was busy too, but she always waited until he woke up to have breakfast together before leaving for work. She also came home earlier in the evening. When he was in kindergarten, she even picked him up every day.

Although Luis was young, his upbringing made him more observant than most kids his age. He had figured out from daily life that his mother’s schedule was a little more flexible than his father’s.

River was stunned for a moment. Then he gently took Luis’s hand and said, “Come on, Uncle River will take you inside. Your dad really is home, and he’ll stay for dinner tonight. I don’t think he’ll go out again later.”

River didn’t dare make promises beyond that.

He and Romina had come to visit, and Johnathan was entertaining them now. River had no idea if Johnathan would leave again once they left.

Johnathan often said his son was easygoing—he could play happily by himself and never made a fuss. That was because Luis was too sensible for his age. He understood his parents were busy, so he learned to entertain himself quietly instead of crying or throwing tantrums.

River couldn’t help comparing Johnathan to his own brothers, who wouldn’t even miss an important meeting if it meant being there for their kids. By comparison, Johnathan seemed like a father who didn’t spend nearly enough time with his child.
