Aitana had already made things clear to Joaquin—whatever was between them was their business and shouldn’t involve anyone else. Yet the moment she said it, Joaquin marched straight off to confront Alex.

He didn’t actually cause trouble, but Aitana still felt guilty that Alex had been dragged into unnecessary drama.

“It’s really not a burden,” Alex said calmly. “Maybe I’ve been around you too much lately—running errands for the renovation, grabbing meals, being seen together. Dr. Legare probably misunderstood and assumed we’re dating. He didn’t touch me, he just said some unpleasant things.”

He sounded casual, unfazed. “It’s fine. I won’t take it to heart. I’m someone who can handle anything—even if the sky falls, I’ll use it as a blanket. He only came to me because he feels threatened and lacks confidence.”

Then Alex hesitated before asking, “Aitana, do you really not have feelings for him? Objectively speaking… he’s a good match for you.”

Even after hearing her answer countless times, he still couldn’t help testing her again.

“I mean, your second uncle and aunt seem to like him,” he continued. “You’ve known each other for years, you understand each other, and his clinic’s doing well. You both studied medicine—you have common ground.”

Aitana paused, collecting her thoughts before speaking. “Joaquin is suitable as a friend, not as a husband. Our values clash. If we forced ourselves to be together, we would only argue—constantly. We view life differently, we handle people differently.

And I’ve only ever seen him as a senior, nothing more. Sure, we can talk about medical topics, but in life? We have nothing in common.”

She exhaled softly. “The truth is, I didn’t reject him just because I don’t love him. His feelings for me are tied to my family background. That makes them impure. And honestly? He’s indecisive. He kept Yehua hanging while pursuing me. I can’t respect that.”

“If he didn’t like Yehua, he should have rejected her and let her move on. Instead, he enjoyed her attention while chasing me.”

She continued, “Yehua goes to his house nearly every day, cleaning, helping out. They work together at the clinic, they get along, they’re a better fit. My second uncle likes Joaquin because he mentored him, and in medicine he’s excellent. My second aunt isn’t particularly fond of him, though—she likes you more. Even my brother, who’s only met you a couple of times, said you’re impressive.”

Alex chuckled. “Brother Carlos has good taste.”

“Of course you’re excellent,” Aitana laughed lightly. “All the York men are. Grandma York really knows how to raise incredible grandsons. Honestly, it’s a shame she didn’t run a school.”

“She actually did once,” Alex revealed. “But when she got older, she didn’t want the responsibility. After my brother took over York Corporation, she slowly sold some properties and handed others to daughters-in-law and granddaughters-in-law to manage.”
